Near Future
I believe that too many of us are expecting a dystopian future, that this false narrative has become so embedded in our culture that we are causing it to happen. I explore a planet that brings the Earth back. We learn to embrace nature, we bring critical thinking and a movement of citizen scientists to all grades of public education. We change our value system and come to the realization that we are all one people and need to live as a community.
All five of the stories take place in the same time period and originate from the same American city. I try to give the reader a glimpse into this world from the eyes of several different people. Each accepting or rejecting emerging technologies as befitting their individual needs and personalities.
But most of all, I like to think of this book as a conversation that the future might have with the present.
Bones, Native Spirits
During the construction of Renee and her husbands’ new home the workers discover a cache of bones. Using her sensitivity to objects, Renee, from their very bones, learns much about the lives of these three ancient people. Eventually, the emotions become solid figures, and so she begins a relationship with the Native Spirits.
Marilyn
Marilyn is the dark take of Marilyn McDouglas, as told by her daughter, Annistasia. She keeps many secrets, most are never revealed to the other characters, only to the reader. One of the most shocking is that Marilyn has the ability to reincarnate herself. As her new host is being born, her old body dies. So, she chooses her new mother carefully. Tales of her former lives and the sinister plan for her next life, slowly come into focus in this unique work of occult horror.
My objective with this book is to create a character whose personality is the natural result of the extra ordinary circumstances of their existence. Their lack of regard for mortal life, a product of seeing so many born and die. The realization of what elements of life are truly significant. Their fear of real death.
Most of my readers dislike Marilyn, seeing no redeeming characteristics. Is it her cold blooded lack of compassion and remorse? Or, is it because, in this life, she does it as a woman.
Leigh Paul
Leigh Paul is a stand alone novel that reveals the next incarnation of Marilyn. In this life, he has the body that he knew in his first life and, as a male, his murderous, altered sense of moraltiy is somehow more acceptable. He’s the good looking bad boy that everyone loves, an impressive force, his cunning and lack of contemporary values give him a unique perspective on life and living. Witnessing so many live and die over the centuries has caused him to be detached from humanity. Nostalgic for the old world, he goes on a quest to build himself a life in the wilderness, to revive that primitive soul that his immortality had nearly spent. Despite civilizations’s attempts to foil his plans, he pushes ahead to attain his goals at any cost, murder and seduction being the tools of choice for this modern day Viking.
